Will I need to have a medical exam, or see my doctor?
Not necessarily. Most people are accepted on the basis of the information they provide in their health declaration. Sometimes the insurer will write to your doctor for more detailed information (you give them permission to do this of course). It’s possible however that due to either your own health or the level of cover you’re applying for, a simple medical examination is needed. This is likely to only involve a visit to your home or work by a registered nurse who’ll collect blood and other samples, quiz you about health issues you may have mentioned in your application, and conduct a basic examination. If this service is required in your case, we’ll tell you, and in most cases it’s free of charge. Think of it as a health warrant of fitness!

Do I have to provide health evidence?
Apart from your application answers, it’s unlikely you’ll be asked directly for more health evidence. Insurers usually prefer to confidentially contact your GP directly for health information. It’s vital however that you disclose all relevant health information on your application, to avoid any future doubt of being able to claim.

Will my premium go up in the future?
Yes, your premium increases each year in line with your age and, if you’ve selected this option, in line with inflation. Most insurers also allow you the option to pay a slightly higher premium from the start, which stays the same for either five years, ten years or even until age 65 and beyond. Please contact us for more information on these options, as they may save you money longer term.

What payments option do I have?
All our insurers allow monthly premiums, by either credit card or direct debit. Some also have fortnightly, quarterly, half-annually and annually. All prices we quote are defaulted monthly. Please contact us if you’re interested in any of these other options.

How does smoking affect my premium?
People who smoke (even just a few times a week or even a month, or if you quit less than a year ago) will have to pay a higher life insurance premium. If you successfully quit smoking for at least 12 months you are able to apply to have your premium reduced; simply contact us and we’ll provide you the required forms.

When is my first payment due?
Once your policy is accepted and issued by the insurer, your first premium becomes due within the following 2-3 weeks. With most insurers you’re able to specify the date in the month you’d like your regular payment processed. If your application is not accepted by an insurer, you’re not required to make any payment at all.

What’s a Free Look Period?
This is a facility required by law, which allows you to review your policy upon its receipt by you to make sure it’s suitable for your purposes. If you choose not to proceed with your policy during the free look period, any premium you may have paid will be refunded to you, and the policy cancelled.

What happens if a claim has to be made?
If an event arises that you think will lead to a claim, please contact us immediately. Depending on the nature of the claim, you will be required to supply certain information to process it, including a completed claim form, a death certificate, your policy document, coroner’s reports, or other material as required by the insurer. We will help you with this. For health insurance claims, please contact us as soon as your doctor recommends a procedure to you, as most of our insurers allow pre-approval of claims.
